A north-east teenager has been shortlisted for a prestigious writing award.
Estelle Maskame is one of five finalists in the Young Adult Romantic Novel award category, which features protagonists who are teenagers or young adults, at the 2016 Romantic Novel Awards.
Estelle began writing her contemporary romance trilogy – the ‘DIMILY’ trilogy – at the age of 13 and had finished it by 16. The books were first uploaded chapter by chapter on Wattpad, where they became a viral phenomenon and had more than four million reads worldwide.
From Peterhead, where she is part of a large fishing family, Estelle didn’t find herself limited by location – basing the books in Santa Monica, New York and Portland – places she’s never even visited. Estelle extensively researched the areas through Google Maps street view to ensure the details were as accurate as possible, and also regularly consulted her US readers for authenticity.
She said: “I’m honoured to be shortlisted for this award. It proves that young writers are just as capable as anyone when it comes to writing romance.”
If she wins the category, she will then go forward to the overall, most prestigious, award, The Goldsboro Books’ Romantic Novel of the Year 2016, sponsored by independent specialist bookshop Goldsboro Books.
The 2016 RNA Awards will be announced and presented by Fern Britton at a ceremony in London on March 7.
