Name: Rogan James Mackie
School attended: The Gordon Schools in Huntly
Job title: ITCA-trained apprentice engineer at Mackie's of Scotland.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU LEFT SCHOOL?
I always wanted to be an engineer, as it seemed to be a good profession to get into. I liked the fact there are so many different types of engineering and that it can be a very rewarding job if you work hard enough.
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT ITCA?
I researched lots of different colleges and training centres online, then when I asked my friends, most of them recommended ITCA to me over the others. ITCA has a very good reputation and I know a lot of people who have trained with ITCA, who then succeeded in securing full-time apprenticeships, that’s why I decided to choose ITCA.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN AT ITCA?
ITCA trains its pre-apprentices on a number of different disciplines; this was extremely helpful when I entered a workplace. I was shown how to use different types of machinery and learned all the necessary health and safety procedures.
As well as all the practical elements, I was also trained on how to fill out the paperwork that was required after completing each job. I learned a great deal about engineering and it was
thanks to ITCA that I felt confident enough to start my apprenticeship with Mackies. I’m almost three years into my apprenticeship and I still go to ITCA once a fortnight, so I feel like I’m constantly developing and learning new skills.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB AT MACKIES INVOLVE?
My job involves fixing, maintaining, and sometimes even installing, new machines, parts of machines and equipment. These include the chocolate and moulding machines, but I also do lots of other odd jobs that help to keep the factory continuously up and running.
ARE YOU LEARNING A LOT THROUGH YOUR WORK?
Every day at Mackies is different, so I’m constantly learning new things. I’m really happy with the training and development I receive, as I do a mixture of various jobs throughout the day.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I really like the variety of work I do. It’s great that there are lots of different machines in the factory, as this means I’m not doing the same thing all the time. The discount we receive off all Mackies products is certainly a great perk to the job as well.
WHAT IS YOUR CAREER GOAL?
My career goal is to be a successful engineer and, some day, have enough money to own my dream car – a Nissan GTR.
Kevin Jepson, service manager at Mackie’s of Scotland, said: “Mackies are delighted to bring Rogan on board to finish his apprenticeship. He has settled in well and will be a benefit to the company’s long term future.”
