Dream career change
A former oil and gas worker has counted himself very lucky after a Facebook post landed him his dream career in finance.
Formerly a buyer at an electrical services company, Kevin Phillip, 33, from Newmachar, made the move into financial services after he passed all of his mortgage advice exams in the space of three months and posted about his success on Facebook.
Now a fully qualified mortgage adviser at Phil Anderson Financial Services, he was offered the position when his current employer noticed his status and offered him a job on the spot.
After 15 years in the oil and gas industry, a reduction in his workload, the slump in oil price and support and guidance from his wife were all reasons that Mr Phillip eventually made the decision to pursue a career in finance, the industry he’d always wanted to work in.
After deciding to fund himself through the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) at the beginning of 2015, Mr Phillip passed his first exam in January, completed all three modules within three months, and received his accreditation by the end of March 2015.
Remarkably, he managed to juggle studying for his exams alongside working full-time and also caring for his newborn daughter. It was this achievement and the subsequent Facebook post that caught the eye of his current boss, Phil Anderson, managing director of Phil Anderson Financial Services.
Mr Phillip said: “After Phil saw my status, he got in touch to say how impressed he was that I’d managed to pass the exams within three months. That’s when he offered me the position of mortgage adviser.
“I’ve been here for over a year now and I’m so glad that I decided to put myself through the course as I’m really enjoying my career in finance. I feel like I fit in really well in the office, it’s like I’ve been here for years.
“I’m so happy that I was given the opportunity to progress within the finance industry, I just wish I had gone for it sooner. I would never have imagined that a simple Facebook post would get me where I am today. I’ll certainly never underestimate the power of social media ever again.”
Mr Anderson said: “When Kevin received his certificate, we were moving office, expanding our team, and looking for new advisers, so the timing was absolutely perfect.
“I was extremely impressed that he had managed to gain his CeMAP accreditation within three months, whilst still working full time, considering he had no background in the finance industry. He’s got a fantastic work ethic, which is evident in the lengths he goes to help both his colleagues and his clients.
“Kevin’s settled in really well and is a fantastic addition to the team. He’s had a really successful first year and I’m glad that we were able to offer him the opportunity to get into financial services.”
Phil Anderson Financial Services Ltd offers independent financial advice to its clients. Launched in 2011, it is based in Aberdeen and also has offices in Ellon and Caithness.
