Looking to grow your career with your employer? It’s all about ‘trust'

It is becoming increasingly common for people to feel ‘maxed out’ in their job. They feel like they outgrow their role, that their employer cannot fulfil their desire to develop and so they leave to chase the next opportunity. However, it does not always need to be a case of leaving an established career to get to the next step or try something new, something that is recognised at Chartered Accountancy & Business Advisory firm Anderson Anderson & Brown LLP (AAB).
AAB provides a number of different accountancy and business advisory services to a variety of industries across the globe. In line with the firm’s growth, AAB staff have plenty of chances to explore different opportunities and develop their long-term career.
Someone who experienced this first hand is Lisa Tait, private client senior manager at AAB. Lisa studied Law & German at university and, after realising a career in law wasn’t for her she graduated and accepted a role at an accountancy firm. After two years, a former colleague contacted her to make her aware of an opening in AAB’s Private Client team. This phone call has led to a decade-long career at AAB for Lisa, who has had the opportunity to grow and develop as the firm itself has grown and developed.
Throughout her time at AAB, Lisa has gone from focusing on general tax return preparation to specialising in Inheritance Tax and Trust planning, advising a wide range of clients and working closely with other departments across the firm such as Accounting Services and AAB Wealth.
When asked about her career so far Lisa said: “Although I have never moved department in AAB, my career has continuously developed in an organic way. I started out doing general compliance work and was then asked to assist in Trust work. I realised I really enjoyed learning about this specialist area and there were untapped work opportunities for AAB in this field. The partner in charge could not have been more helpful in supporting me through this career transition and the firm put me through the relevant qualifications. My focus is now almost exclusively Trust and Inheritance tax work with my clients ranging from businesses, landed estate owners and individuals.
“I am constantly faced with new challenges and opportunities. As well as expanding my own skills there is still huge potential for the team to develop our specialist tax offering and venture into other exciting avenues. I’m excited to see what the future holds for my career at AAB.”
