My phone starts ringing before 7.30am so I am always in the office by 7am. We have goods on the road first thing every day, so I like to have an early start, knowing our customers’ orders are safely on their way. At Greenwell we provide containers, cabins, modular buildings, pallet racking and shelving, as well as office furniture, so that’s a large amount of goods being shipped from our depots in Aberdeen across the country.
Once the drivers are all happy, my phone gets busy with sales enquiries. Greenwell has been going for over 20 years and a lot of our success is down to the fact that we have a reputation for being reliable and flexible, as well as extremely competitive, so we work closely with clients to find the best solution. From helping clients to choose between used and new containers, to discussing specific requirements for modular building fit outs, I spend a large part of my day working with colleagues to make sure every order meets the customer’s individual needs.
If I get the chance, I will get my lunch from the Thai van. I’ve spent a lot of time in Thailand and the van food is very authentic and good value too. At Greenwell we have a very strong ethos of health and safety, so we don’t eat separately at our desks but get together in the office kitchen to eat and catch up.
I’ve been with Greenwell for 14 years, and in that time we have evolved from a small second-hand furniture business into one of the biggest stockists of containers, furniture, warehouse storage and modular buildings in the north-east, and that means no day is ever the same. The recent downturn has of course affected Greenwell, but we have very loyal customers and we are fortunate to have secured a number of large contracts over the last couple of years, including providing modular buildings to the new Queensferry Crossing and also the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.
So as well as dealing with new business calls and e-mails, I spend a lot of my time talking to our clients, checking on any maintenance issues and new requests. Part of Greenwell’s success is down to the incredible team we have. I work alongside sales people who put customer care at the heart of everything they do, working hard to get the very, very best price, quality and delivery. We have installation teams across the country and they call in regularly, so communication across the whole team is very good.
I play darts at Murdo’s Lounge, with my colleague Alan Western, and also run three or four times a week. However, from January, I have started serious training for the Rat Race Coast to Coast challenge in September. I run, and I have a bike covered in dust in my garage, but along with a group of friends I will be running, cycling and kayaking over 105 miles across the Scottish Highlands, so the training needs to step up.
