Sheryl’s Appetite for Business pays off with award

A north-east businesswoman has been recognised with a national award for her part in an Aberdeen company’s continued success.

Sheryl Newman, director of IT learning and data provider Appetite for Business, received the Business of the Year honour at the ASB National Business Awards.

The event, organised by the Association of Scottish Businesswomen (ASB), was held at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow. The awards celebrate and recognise the achievements of women working across all industry sectors throughout Scotland.

Sheryl said: “To win against such strong competitors is something we are very proud of at Appetite and on a personal level I’m thrilled to have won this prestigious award. In addition, it continues to bolster our company position as a leading IT learning and data organisation and continue to drive our reputation forward.

“This award success is also recognition for our business, of the great team we have and their hard work, talent and commitment.

“It’s been an exciting year for the company as we continue with our ambitious growth strategy as well as providing an unrivalled level of service to our clients, both in the north-east and around the world.”

One of the awards judges, Katherine McCudden of the Institute of Directors, said: “We were struck by what a strong candidate Sheryl was… A truly passionate leader with transparent principals of quality throughout the business. All the judges were blown away.”

Fellow Appetite for Business director Duncan Robbie said: “Sheryl’s knowledge, enthusiasm and determination for success has worked to identify and uphold her as an inspirational figure to others in the Scottish business community.

“Not only has she applied her knowledge and expertise to underpin Appetite as a leader in our industry, but she has also lent her skills, externally, to mentor and support other female entrepreneurs and champions women working in the IT sector by delivering presentations at local schools and universities.”

Based in the city’s Bridge of Don area, Appetite for Business works with oil and gas operators and international service companies to deliver innovative IT learning and data solutions.

The business recorded turnover of £1.3million for its April 2014 year-end – an increase of 117% on its 2011 figures. The company expects to record turnover of £1.5m for 2015.

Sheryl Newman is also the co-founder of Girl Geek Scotland, a bespoke community which supports women working in the country’s technology sector.

This led to her invitation to join Intellect’s Women in IT Forum, the UK trade association for the IT, telecommunications and electronics industries. Sheryl is the only Scottish representative.
