Aspecialist oil and gas recruitment business is going against the industry trend by opening a new Aberdeen office. This is despite the continued pressures caused by the low oil price.
Based on the city’s Greenbank Road, Copius has been set up specifically to service the global energy market with particular emphasis on technical and engineering contractors.
Managing director Kenny Dooley, a former regional director at Petroplan, has more than 10 years’ oil and gas recruitment experience and has recently worked as a consultant in the Granite City.
In its first weeks of business, the company had a series of successful contractor placements in the North Sea, Bulgaria, Romania and the Netherlands. Copius is currently in discussions to provide welders, fabricators and pipefitters for a major project in West Central Africa.
The business has already provided skilled personnel for drilling and international service companies across various disciplines including welding, fabrication, compEX electrical, mechanical, project management, QHSE engineering and drill crew.
It is expected that this level of activity will lead to additional investment and job creation by the end of the year.
Kenny Dooley said: “The majority of people have been very supportive of my decision to leave a steady job in consultancy to set up an oil and gas recruitment business in the current market.
“This is not something I have taken lightly, particularly with a young family to support. However, I believe there is a space in a once very saturated market. Recruitment agencies from Glasgow, Manchester and London have been moving away from the oil, gas and energy sector over the past 12 months and many companies in Aberdeen are closing, downsizing or turning attention to other markets.
“We are well aware of the challenges faced by the industry today but have confidence that our proactive approach and international focus will pay dividends in the short and long-term. We understand the needs of the energy industry on a local, national and international level and, as a result, we’re well positioned for the upturn when it does come.
“Despite the pessimistic outlook across the industry at large, there is still activity to be had for companies who are willing to cast their net far and wide. We have already received significant orders from a number of leading businesses for overseas projects and there is no doubt that the skills and capabilities possessed by the workforce here in the north-east continue to be a valuable asset around the world.”
Copius works closely with businesses in the oil and gas, renewables, engineering, decommissioning and rail industries to provide contractor, permanent and temporary personnel. The company is ISO 9001 accredited and is fully registered with Achilles and REC.
