The National Risk & Resilience Department (NRRD) provides a comprehensive, effective and robust organisation wide structure for risk management, integrated emergency planning, business continuity and specialised operational response across Scotland. The Department manages a logistics facility, a training facility, the community first responder contribution and also directly manages the full-time Special Operations Response Teams.

We work directly with the Scottish Government and an extensive network of external organisations responsible for strategic developments on a Scottish and UK level in order to ensure there is an integrated approach to Civil Contingency planning.

This new posts within the NRRD have been developed to primarily support specialist training & exercising activities for the North SORT Team.

The Practice Placement Educator role is known within NRRD as a SORT Trainer. The post-holder/s will work across the full-time SORT Teams and where required will also support the 2 on-call SORT Teams. Post-holder/s will require to be flexible in their approach to the Trainer role including the requirement to undertake unsocial hours working. In addition there will also be a requirement to work flexibly to support core SORT shifts although this will only apply after utilisation of those staff on the flexible [relief] 12 hour shift pattern. Please note: this role will only be employed within SORT and not the wider Service.

The post will provide operational training design and delivery functions across the teams to support ongoing specialist training programmes. The post-holder/s will be accountable for innovation, development of and for the implementation of the national SORT training programme which is required to meet statutory and Service requirements for major / specialist incident preparation and response whilst placing clinical quality at the heart of service delivery.

Reporting to and taking direction from NRRD Training and Development Manager, the post holder/s will work in support of the Special Operations Group [SOG] to ensure appropriate training governance arrangements are in place for the SORT Teams. A key part of this will be to work in collaboration with the Special Operations Managers and SORT Team Leaders.

The post holder/s will be responsible for ensuring that an effective specialist operational response is developed, validated and maintained at a satisfactory level to meet emerging threat and risk, statutory and professional standards through direct training and exercising support to SORT. Robust ongoing evidence of training and exercising programmes will be produced by the postholder/s in collaboration with the SOG, Local Team Leaders and the NRRD Partnership Forum.

The post will also involve effective collaboration with local SORT Team Leaders, the other emergency and statutory services, the wider NHS, local authorities, voluntary agencies, HART trainers, other external stakeholders and networks.

Where capacity allows the post holder/s may also support delivery of programmes from the wider NRRD course prospectus. This will require to be agreed by the Training and Development Manager and Head of Specialist Operations prior to undertaking these activities.

It is crucial that postholder/s ensure that appropriate policies and procedures such as Health & Safety are followed, complied with and championed on a daily basis during non-training periods and training & exercising activities.

We are looking for flexible individuals with a “can do” approach and who have excellent people, analytical, practical teaching and presentational skills. You will have excellent oral and written communication skills. It is vitally important that you are be able to demonstrate the ability to work to a high standard using your own initiative and be able to provide regular briefings to managers within the Scottish Ambulance Service.

To be successful you will require a minimum of 1 years experience within Special Operations/Hazardous Area Response and 5 years Registered Paramedic with desirable training skills and qualifications. Resilience, incident, exercise management and operational management experience would also be advantageous. You must be computer literate and familiar with Microsoft applications and databases. The nature of the role means that you will be required to deal with sensitive information for which Security Clearance (SC) will be required.
