The Visitor Centre & Retail Manager will be responsible for the smooth running of the Wild Space Visitor Centre on a day to day basis.  

The job involves ensuring that the shop, exhibition area and gallery space are run efficiently and effectively and that the shop is profitable.  The Manager will also ensure that staff and volunteers are fully versed in the goals and objectives of the centre and that excellent visitor/customer care standards are met.  The successful candidate will have the personality to enthuse the public with the Trust’s long-term vision for wild places. If desired, there will be an opportunity to contribute to the creative process of refreshing the design of the Visitor Centre, proposed for early 2020.

Specific duties

  • recommending, sourcing and purchasing retail merchandise
  • recording retail sales and managing stock on a day-to-day basis
  • producing monthly financial and sales reports
  • sourcing exhibitions for the gallery space and managing all communications with the artist
  • recommending and initiating changes to improve the centre, taking into account customer feedback
  • recruiting, managing, training and motivating a small team of volunteers and staff
  • promoting the centre locally by supporting relevant community events
  • ensuring high standards of visitor experience
  • complying with Health and Safety and other relevant policies
  • carrying out other duties commensurate with the post

Person specification

Essential attributes

  • Experience in retail management and/or managing a small business
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills, positive attitude, flexibility
  • Good people management skills
  • Good organisational skills and excellent time management
  • Proven experience of using electronic till and data systems with associated stock management input
  • IT literate including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Willingness to learn

Desirable attributes:

  • Experience in managing a visitor centre and/or running a gallery
  • Interest in the goals and objectives of the John Muir Trust

Position information : 

  • Line Manager : Director of Finance and Resources
  • Position : Fixed term, 18 months. 
  • Hours: Full- Time, 5 days over a 7 day rota including regular weekends., 
  • Pension : 5% employer contribution paid into a group pension scheme
  • Closing date: 5pm, Wednesday 4 July 2018
