Mechanical Design Engineer

Originally established in 1909, our client is a thriving 3rd generation family-owned business with a small and friendly team with excellent employee retention. Based in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, they design, test, assemble and sell products worldwide, including their own branded range of thermostatic control valves for water, steam and gas.Recently they extended their range into the manufacture of award-winning taps, showers and disinfection devices within the UK Healthcare market.
Due to ongoing success we are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a small team of 2x professional engineers (supported by two technicians). You will be responsible for researching and developing designs for new products; whilst maintaining and improving the production facility for the existing product range. Other duties will include but may not be limited to:
·Testing product prototypes.
·Assessment of competitors’ products
·Analysis of test data
·Identification and implementation of product improvements. (This will require a measure of creativity whilst simultaneously maintaining a tenacious grip of sound engineering principles and practice).
·Assisting technically in the management of the supply chain.
·Ensure products meet stringent industry and International standards.
·Review product specifications, instructions and or drawings before issue to suppliers overseas and monitor actual supply conformance to these.
The ideal Mechanical Design Engineer will be hardworking team player with a positive and versatile approach to their work. You will also need the following:
·A degree in Mechanical Engineering
·Have gained or be working towards IMechE Chartered Engineer status.
·Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a role involving product-design, project management, and designing and supervising batch-manufacturing processes.
·Experience and regular use of a professional-grade 3D CAD system such as Solidworks. (The design department also has a legacy AutoCAD system).
·A working knowledge of modern manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, injection-moulding, extrusion, laser-cutting & etching, electro-plating & spray-finishing; as well as rapid-prototyping techniques and modern measurement equipment including CMM.
.Be a strong communicator, able to motivate and lead from the front with excellent spoken English and flexible communication skills as interfacing with suppliers and customers of various backgrounds from architects to plumbers will be required.
·Some electronics and/or computer programming experience.
·Experience of managing type-approvals or a similar compliance framework.
- Be familiar with the various product design standards in the valve, pipes and fittings industry.
- Knowledge of metallurgical/materials and manufacturing processes
- Knowledge of surface treatments and painting of metals
- Knowledge of assembly methods in relation to valves, pipes and fittings.
- Experience in dimensional and quality inspection.
The salary initially will be £45,500.00 per annum and will be paid on a monthly basis.
Hours of work
Normal hours in the design department are 8-15am to 5-00pm Monday to Thursday and 8-15am to 1-00pm on Friday.
Contributory scheme – details given at a later date.
Death in service
You will be eligible to join the scheme immediately and the current value to the employee’s beneficiaries is four times basic salary.
There will be 25 days per annum available for holidays and the dates will be your choice plus 9 statutory days. Our holiday year runs from 1st January to 31st December and therefore holiday entitlement will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
A discretionary Bonus may be payable based on company performance.

Contract of employment
Formal contract will be offered on completion of a probationary period of 3 months.
