Job Title Wholesale Accountant
Salary: £31,500 to £47,900 (depending on skills and experience) + annual bonus.
Permanent Full Time Hours with flexible working patterns available
The role of Wholesale Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely execution of general accounting, period end closing, and reporting activities, and delivery of reporting information to business management and wider Finance community in line with defined reporting protocols.
The Accountant will work with the rest of the Wholesale Finance Team to provide updates on financial performance and provide additional insight through reporting and commentary as required. This person will challenge whilst supporting the business to discharge its annual budget, business plans and long term forecasts. Strong financial management and accountability will be important and will be able to be applied across both the E&P business and/or the wider Wholesale business.
1. Period end close & reporting
Timely review of mid-month and month end journals and reports, applying expert knowledge of financial and management accounting in addition to a medium level of judgement, and communicating changes required. Applying strong commercial and industry knowledge of the Oil and Gas Industry and/or the wider Wholesale Power market.
Support Finance Analysts in the preparation of supporting journals calculations for non-recurring/non-standard and/or complex journals.
Constant review of period end close processes with views to drive accuracy and efficiency within the month end close activities.
2. P&L preparation & BS reconciliations
Timely review of P&L and BS control account reconciliations using judgement to highlight and investigate key and unexpected variances providing supporting commentary when required prior to review. Monitor and evaluate controls recommending improvements if required.
3. Management Reporting
Timely review of management reports (e.g. monthly reporting pack reports, KPI, etc.). Active engagement will be required with business management teams on monthly financials and involvement in reporting to Advisory Board's. Monthly engagement with our third party operators to fully understand operators' reports and their current views on capex and opex.
4. Statutory Reporting
Preparation of statutory accounts including highly technical and/or judgemental areas with little guidance. Liason with company auditors, ensuring accurate and timely processing of adjustment journals and report changes following any review.
5. Strategic Business Planning
Engage with all business stakeholders understand the strategic direction of the business, translate this into the key financials in support of the five year plan with annual budgets produced in support of the strategy. Challenge and understand fully the cost base and where future value may exist.
6. Budgeting & Forecasting
Co-ordinate and consolidate the annual budget including stakeholder sign off, providing financial insight and challenge as necessary to ensure budgets are accurate and realistic.

7. Project Work
Provide accounting support for specific project related activities at the BU level, such as preparation of acquisition completion accounts, impairment review models, chart of account changes, requesting updates to reports as a result of new cost centres.
8. Continued Compliance
Adhere to Group and BU specific policies and procedures.
Support External and Internal Audit activities as required, such as providing information as requested in a timely manner.
Monitor and remediate effectiveness of controls by responding to breaches in a timely manner
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential Job Specific Skills and Experiences
* Fully qualified accountant with experience in an operational finance role with exposure to issues of similar complexity.
* Effectively communicating financial performance to operational colleagues to embed financial understanding within the business.
* Excellent knowledge of current regulations including IFRS / new UK GAAP, Companies Acts, Regulatory Licences etc.
* Good knowledge of core financial systems and general accounting procedures.
* Understanding of market conditions that can affect the E & P and wider Wholesale businesses.
* Adaptive to changing objectives and priorities to deliver results.
* Focused on creating value for the Group.
* Operational and commercial focus.
Functional and Technical Skills
* Operationally and commercially focussed.
* Proficient in MS Office applications (particularly excel)
* Highly developed analytical skills
* Degree-level education or equivalent
* Knowledge of SSE equivalent systems, processes and workflow technology
* In depth knowledge of ERP software (Oracle desirable)
